“Mama Called!” This iconic phrase resonates deeply in the world of football, particularly when legendary figure Bear Bryant decides to return to his roots to coach. It’s fascinating how former players often find their way back home. Sources have informed OleMiss365 that the Rebels may be welcoming a familiar face back to the coaching staff: former Ole Miss safety Marcus Woodson. OleMiss365 was the first to report the news earlier this week.
Woodson, who hails from Moss Point, was a two-year starting safety for the Rebels before an injury cut his playing career short just before his senior season in 2003. During his time with the team, he contributed to four bowl game appearances, including notable outings at the Cotton Bowl, Music City Bowl, and two Independence Bowl games. Like many talented athletes from Mississippi, Woodson chose to stay close to home after clinching two state titles at Moss Point High School.
Bringing Woodson back would undoubtedly be a stellar move for head coach Pete Golding, not only because of his impressive 22 years of coaching experience but also due to his strong ties to the program. After a brief stint in the Big 12 at Kansas State, where he was set to serve as co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach since December, Woodson is poised for a return to Oxford.
Before joining K-State, Woodson spent three seasons at Arkansas as co-defensive coordinator. His first year in Fayetteville was remarkable; he transformed Arkansas’s secondary into its best-performing unit in over a decade, allowing just 202.8 passing yards per game—a significant improvement of 99 spots nationally from the previous season. The Razorbacks allowed only 357.2 yards per game overall and led the nation with five defensive touchdowns.
In his second year at Arkansas, Woodson guided the team to its first shutout in six seasons and celebrated road victories against both Auburn and Mississippi State. Against Auburn, his secondary achieved a season-high four interceptions while breaking up six passes; they also snagged two interceptions against Mississippi State.
Prior to Arkansas, Woodson spent three successful seasons at Florida State, where he was responsible for coaching defensive backs and coordinating the passing defense strategy. His efforts contributed significantly to FSU’s successful 10-win season in 2022, capped off by a victory over Oklahoma in the Cheez-It Bowl. Under his guidance, Florida State ranked fourth nationally by allowing only 165.4 passing yards per game.
Among his standout pupils was safety Jammie Robinson, who earned All-ACC First Team honors under Woodson’s mentorship with an impressive total of 99 tackles—his second consecutive year leading FSU’s defense.
Robinson became part of an ongoing trend: during Woodson’s tenure at Florida State, eight different defenders recorded interceptions and collectively forced 20 turnovers in just one season alone (2021). Notably, Robinson was drafted by Carolina in the fifth round of the NFL Draft in 2023—marking another success for Woodson’s coaching legacy that includes first-round pick Noah Igbinoghene from Miami Dolphins fame.
Woodson’s coaching journey began at Auburn, where he helped secure back-to-back winning seasons (17 wins combined) from 2018-2019 as co-defensive coordinator. He played an instrumental role as Auburn advanced to nine victories and participated in the Outback Bowl during that time frame.
Before Auburn came two fruitful years at Memphis, where he coached defensive backs and saw significant success: Memphis tallied an impressive total of takeaways—60 over two seasons—and ranked among national leaders with their interception totals.
Woodson’s coaching roots trace back even further—to Fresno State (2014-2015), where he contributed significantly towards leading them into championship contention while fostering future NFL talent like Derron Smith.
His early career included roles as defensive backs coach at Charleston Southern (2009-2013) and Millsaps College (2005-2008), where he helped guide teams through multiple championships while mentoring numerous all-conference selections along the way.
As news unfolds regarding Marcus Woodson’s potential return to Oxford becomes clearer—we’ll keep you posted! After all, when Mama calls… it seems fitting that Coach Woodson is ready to answer!
