Rebels set single-season HR record with victory over instate foe Southern Miss

Ole Miss softball took a break from the brutality of the DSEC schedule on Tuesday night, as the Rebels defeated instate foe Southern Miss by a 12-5 score. Ole Miss blasted four home runs in the game, running away to victory.

Ole Miss improved to 28-21. Southern Miss dropped to 30-20.

The star of the game was freshman phenom Madi George. George blasted two monstruous home runs bringing her total on the season to 20. She set the freshmen record for home runs in a season last weekend at LSU and has it 10 round-trippers over her last 10 games.

George blasted a two-run homer to right field in the second inning inning and followed that up with a solo shot over the left field wall in the fourth. She also ripped an RBI-double to right in her first at-bat of the game. All told, George registered a 3-for-3 night with four RBIs, one walk and three runs scored.

Ole Miss fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first but responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back. The Rebels added two in the second and one in each of the third and fourth innings. A three-run top of the sixth round out the scoring for the Rebels.

Shortstop Cassie Reasner was hot at the plate, as well. Reasner tunred in a 2-for-4 effort with four runs batted in. Reasner’s three-run shot in the bottom of the second broke the single-season team home run record for the Rebels.

First baseman Persy Llamas, designated player Rachel Conners and left fielder Laylonna Applin each had an RBI.

Starting pitching, however, was not sharp. Starter Kyra Aycock lasted just 3,2 innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks. She struck out one.

Lilly Whitten (7-1) came on in relief to earn the victory.
