A&M’s early runs too much for Rebs

Texas A&M exploded out of the gates with nine runs in its first two at-bats Friday evening, as the Aggies defeated Ole Miss 10-6 in the first of a three-game SEC series in Oxford. Texas A&M plated six runs in the top of the first and three in the second to take a commanding 9-0 lead after an inning and half.

The Rebels dropped to 26-16 and to 2-11 inside the SEC. Texas A&M improved to 28-12 and to 9-4 in conference play.

The Aggies did the bulk of their damage against Ole Miss starter Kyra Aycock (10-8). She failed to record an out in the top of the first, allowing six runs (all earned) on three hits and three walks.

Ole Miss head coach Jamie Trachsel then called on Lilly Whitten to stop the bleeding. For the most part Whitten did, as she pitched seven full innings only allowing the Aggies four more runs, but the early hole was too deep.

The Rebels kept up the fight, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second, one in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Freshman sensation Madi George led the charge with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. George has now hit 13 homers in her freshman campaign.

The two teams meet again Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed on the SEC Network+.
