In the world of college basketball, the tide can turn in an instant. This was exemplified during Chris Beard’s return to Austin with the Ole Miss Rebels, who faced off against the Texas Longhorns in a thrilling matchup that showcased both teams’ tenacity.
The first half saw Texas jump out to a commanding lead, fueled by a series of unanswered points that left Ole Miss scrambling. With just seven minutes left before halftime, Tramon Mark’s triple and subsequent jumper extended Texas’s lead to 18 points. Yet, the Rebels were far from defeated. They showcased their fighting spirit, trimming the deficit down to 12 points as the buzzer approached, igniting hope amidst a sea of burnt orange.
As the second half unfolded, Ole Miss emerged with renewed vigor. They displayed flashes of offensive playmaking that had been absent earlier in the game. Just eight minutes into the second period, they sliced the Longhorns’ lead down to a mere two points. A pivotal three-pointer from Illias Karmadiane put the Rebels ahead by three with just over ten minutes remaining.
Despite Texas’s early dominance, it became evident that momentum was shifting. The Rebels, who had struggled to score only 25 points in the first half, surged ahead to a 68-65 lead with 3:35 left on the clock. However, closing out games had been an Achilles’ heel for them this season. The Longhorns rallied with a final burst of energy; Jordan Pope tied the game with a three-pointer and then converted an and-one opportunity to take the lead.
In a heartbreaking turn for Ole Miss, they failed to convert on their final seven shot attempts while Texas unleashed a 14-0 run in just under three minutes, ultimately sealing a 79-68 victory. Matas Vokietaitis shone brightly for Texas, scoring a game-high 27 points on an impressive 9-of-11 shooting performance. He was ably supported by Mark and Pope, who contributed 19 and 13 points, respectively.
Despite their fifth consecutive loss, Ole Miss showed signs of improvement. Eduardo Klafke led the Rebels with 16 points, and while their shooting percentage of 41% was not ideal, they demonstrated more balanced scoring than in previous outings. The key difference lay in Texas’s ability to capitalize on Vokietaitis’s size and skill; he dominated the paint throughout the game. The Rebels’ roster just didn’t have any to match that.
Klatfke reflected on the pressure Vokietatis put on the Rebels: “He applied a lot of pressure because he’s obviously really big, and we don’t have anybody on our roster that is that big. Obviously he was making plays, and his teammates were throwing it outside for him, and he was making shots.”
Post-game, Coach Beard remained resolute about his team’s potential. “We are looking forward to getting back to the best college town in the country, Oxford, MS,” he stated. He expressed hope that fans would stick with them during this challenging stretch and emphasized the fight his team displayed on the court.
This game could serve as a crucial turning point for the Rebels as they strive to regain momentum and confidence back home in the ‘Sip.
“This game was an inch away from starting the bus, but there is something in our guys that continues just to fight and scrap. “So I have a lot of optimism… I still believe in this team,” Beard emphasized.
As Ole Miss prepares for their next challenge against Alabama on February 11th, there is still plenty of basketball left to be played. Tip-off is set from Oxford for 6 PM CT live on the SEC Network.
