As Golding continues to prepare for his first full season at the helm in Oxford, preparation and balance remains at the top of his list to endure success.
As it remains, Golding will call the plays for the defense this upcoming season, and amongst unprecedented times, Golding has remembered and relied on many mentors throughout the last five months. Amongst the changes, Golding mentioned the mentorship of former coach Nick Saban, and current Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and Oregon head coach Dan Lanning amongst many other as being very helpful throughout this abnormal time period.
“Being around Coach Saban has really helped me. There wasn’t a defensive meeting that he wasn’t in, and he wasn’t even calling the plays. But when it comes to game week, I can focus on game planning.” – Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding on balancing two roles
What comes with confidence, is continuing to raise the bar within the inside of the program, and effectively evaluating the right players. Within evaluation, is the process of utilizing new faces to their highest potential.
“The game has changed, if you invest in players, you better have a role for them. I think it is my responsibility to make sure we use them effectively.” – Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding on the changes of being a coordinator to the head coach
Of course added pressure revolves around the program with the recent success that Ole Miss has had, and to help continue the success, Golding has accumulated a staff that is filled with former players, making recruiting a little bit more smooth for his staff.
Pushing the agenda to get the best of out all players, Golding has recognized the importance of bringing recruits in throughout important portions of practice weeks, and helping them build relationships with current players.
“That was the big thing in doing a four day split. I think it’s important for recruits to be able to come in and sit with current players. I want them to see practice, and the tempo of practice.” – Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding on bringing in recruits to spring practice
In the midst of major change, is evolving, and continuing to improve the foundation of the program from both inside and out. Something that will remain a challenge for Golding, but one that he and his staff is ready to attack.
As preparation and balance remains the key figures for potential success, remains the importance of attention to detail. A conservative focus around this is one of the many important things that floats around the facility today, and the importance of the little things will lead to long term success for the Rebels, and it all starts with the coaching staff.
As time will tale, there will be a lot of change, amongst faces of familiarity. This offseason is extremely important for the development of this team, and for the balance of a up and coming staff.
