Rebels whip Jacksonville State to open up Ole Miss Classic action in Oxford

Kyra Aycock improved to 7-1 on the season Friday.

The Ole Miss Rebels wasted little time in setting the tone of the Rebels’ own classic tournament in Oxford on Friday, handing Jacksonville State an 8-0 whipping in a game called due to the mercy rule after five innings.

The victory lifted Ole Miss’ record to 13-5 on the season, while Jacksonville State dipped to 13-6.

The Rebels struck for six runs in the bottom of the first then cruised across the finish liner thanks to the arm of starting pitcher Kyra Aycock, who pitched four innings of shutout ball to improve her record to 7-1 on the young season. Lilly Whitten shut the Gamecocks out in the fifth to seal the deal.

Ole Miss ratted Jacksonville State starter Jaliyah Holm in the bottom of the first. Holm, who managed to record just one out, gave up five earned runs on four hits and walk before taking a quick exit. The offensive highlight of the inning came when Ole Miss first baseman Persy Llamas smashed a two-run home run over the center field wall.

Freshman right fielder Madi George and catcher Kennedy Bunker were the only Rebels with multiple hits, both finishing the game with two hits. Bunker drove in two runs, while George scored twice.

The Rebels return to the diamond Saturday, as they will host Jacksonville State and Louisiana-Monroe. The Jacksonville State game will get underway at 2:30 p.m. CT, with ULM set for 5 p.m. All games will be televised on the SEC Network+.
