Absolutely nothing has come easy for this year’s edition of the Ole Miss Softball Rebels. Ole Miss defeated Auburn 13-11 on Saturday to win its second game of a three-game SEC series. The two teams play a third game on Sunday, but the Rebs secured their first series victory at Auburn since 2008.
It wasn’t easy because Ole Miss had to hang on by its chinny-chin-chin after leading in the contest by scores of 3-0, 8-3, 10-3 and 13-6 before finally squeaking out a two-run victory.
Auburn just kept hammering away.
Fortunately for the Rebels, their bats never failed.
The win moves Ole Miss to 30-21 overall and to 4-16 inside the SEC. Auburn dropped to 24-24 and to 3-17 in the league.
Middle reliever Lilly Whitten (8-1) enter the game starter Kyra Aycock in the bottom of the fourth to earn the win. Whitten, who ran into some trouble of her own in the sixth, pitched 2.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits and three walks. Emillee Boyer worked the final 1.2 innings to earn the save.
Once again, freshman phenom Madi George was the star at the plate. George turned in a 3-for-3 day with a home run and five RBIs before leaving the game in the middle innings with an undisclosed injury. At this point, we do not know what or how severe the injury is. It occurred while she was sliding into second base.
Catcher Kennedy Bunker also homered for the Rebels.
Game 3 of the series begins at noon CT Sunday. It can be viewed on the SEC Network+.
