Midweek Preview: Rebs take on SEMO

The Rebels have been nearly perfect throughout the first two weekends of play. Their pitching staff has the third best ERA in the SEC, the offense has been humming, and the team is having fun playing together. What more could head coach Mike Bianco ask for?

Ole Miss takes on SEMO Tuesday night to close out an early season home-stand before traveling to Houston to participate in the BRUCE BOLT College Classic, where the Rebels will face off against their first P4 and Top 25 opponents.

Terry Hayes Jr. will get the start on the mound for the Rebels. This will be Hayes’ second appearance of the year, coming off a midweek start last Wednesday against Jackson State. In the Rebel victory, Hayes gave up two hits and one earned run while striking out four over three innings.

Judd Utermark is quickly approaching the Ole Miss top 10 in all time homers, currently sitting at 35 HRs for his Rebel career. Utermark needs just one more to tie David Delluci and Michael Rosamond, who each hit thirty-six, for the tenth spot. Kyle Gordon owns the school record, having hit forty-eight over his time as a Rebel.

The Rebels are currently ranked at number 11 nationally in the Baseball America rankings. They are ranked 21st in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 25th in both the NCBWA poll and D1Baseball Top-25.

Scouting SEMO

Caden Kickhaefer will be making his first start for the Redhawks on Tuesday night. Kickhaefer is a senior right hander, he has two appearances in relief this season and has struck out six over 3.2 innings giving up six hits and four earned runs.

The SEMO offense features first baseman Cal Sullivan, who leads the team in home runs and RBI with 3 and 12 respectively. They will also rely heavily on production from DH Joe Hall, who leads the team in batting average with a .419 clip, and CF Caleb Klein, who is second on the team in doubles.

The Redhawks finished last season fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference and were voted by the league coaches to finish second coming into this season. They are led by head coach Jack Sawyer, who is in his tenth year at the helm of the program, he has won over 250 games and led SEMO to three OVC tournament championships and one regular season championship.
