Midweek Preview: Rebels set for Pair of Home Showdowns

The Rebels are hot coming off an opening weekend sweep of Nevada. The Rebels came out with dominance from their pitching staff and a weekend that showed the depth of their offense. A season ago the Rebels set the school single-season record for home runs, and the offense ran off the deep ball. This Ole Miss team showed its ability to hit the ball out of the park but also showcased its small-ball ability, scoring on multiple occasions with singles and doubles.

They remain at home this midweek looking continue their winning ways, set to take on Arkansas State and Jackson State on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Arkansas State

The Rebels face off against the Red Wolves on Tuesday at 4 PM. Owen Kelly will start on the mound for Ole Miss, his second action this season after coming on in relief of Hunter Elliot Friday night against Nevada. Kelly pitched a third of an inning giving up two runs and a walk while facing 5 batters, in an outing where he didn’t show his best stuff.

Arkansas State is coming off its own opening weekend home sweep, claiming a series against Stony Brook over the weekend in Jonesboro. The Red Wolves will start Junior RHP Collin Maloney who owned a 2-3 record with a 4.46 ERA over nine starts last season.

The Red Wolves feature the reigning SBC player of the week in second baseman Lane Walton, who was awarded the honor after hitting three home runs and knocking in 6 RBIs over the weekend against Stony Brook.

Jackson State

The game against Tigers is set to start at 4 PM on Wednesday night at Swayze Field. The Rebels will start sophomore Terry Hayes Jr, a transfer from Bellevue College, for his first action of the season.

Jackson State is coming off a disappointing opening weekend that saw them drop 2 of 3 in the HBCU Power Series, which was hosted at Trustmark Park in Pearl, MS. The Tigers dropped decisions to Prairie View A&M and Alcorn State, with their lone victory coming against Alabama A&M on Saturday.

Jackson State has not announced their starting pitcher for Wednesday at this time. The Tiger lineup will feature preseason first team all SWAC selection Wilbert Perez, who batted .324 last season while knocking in 48 RBIs.
