OXFORD, Miss. — Cayden Lee’s return to Oxford remains uncertain after the former Ole Miss wide receiver was listed as questionable on Wednesday’s SEC availability report. Meanwhile, another former Rebel, Missouri quarterback Austin Simmons, was listed as probable for Saturday’s matchup.
Lee has been one of Missouri’s most productive offensive weapons this season, recording 41 receptions for 607 yards and five touchdowns through six games. His ability to stretch the field and create explosive plays has made him a key part of the Tigers’ passing attack.
Ole Miss coach Pete Golding understands the challenge Lee presents.
“We’re going to have to know where he is on every snap he’s in the game for sure,” Golding said Wednesday.
Lee’s ability to get open downfield and create yards after the catch makes him a player the Rebels must account for in coverage. His connection with Simmons has also become an important part of Missouri’s offense, adding another storyline as both former Rebels prepare for a return to Oxford.
However, Lee isn’t Missouri’s only injury concern.
Starting left tackle Cayden Green was listed as questionable, although he played last week despite carrying the same designation. Tight end Brett Norfleet, linebacker Robert Woodyard Jr. and defensive lineman Darris Smith were also questionable. Missouri listed 24 players on Wednesday’s report, including 11 questionable.
Green’s potential absence could create protection problems against an Ole Miss defensive front looking to generate more consistent pressure.
Ole Miss has concerns of its own. Defensive back Edwin Joseph underwent ankle surgery Wednesday and was ruled out for Saturday’s matchup.
Missouri’s injury questions could change how the Tigers attack Ole Miss, particularly if Lee is unavailable. But Golding’s defense still has work to do. The Rebels must pressure Simmons, tackle consistently and prevent Missouri from turning routine plays into explosive gains.
