The Ole Miss Rebels had an impressive weekend, marking their first SEC series win by taking two out of three matchups against the No. 15-ranked Kentucky Wildcats. The highlight of the series was a nail-biting 12-9 victory on Saturday that showcased the Rebels’ resilience and offensive firepower.
Cade Townsend’s Status: Cautious Optimism
One familiar face missing from the mound was pitcher Cade Townsend, who has been dealing with shoulder inflammation. Initially listed as questionable for the weekend series, Townsend was upgraded to a game-time decision but ultimately did not pitch.
Following Saturday’s victory, Coach Mike Bianco provided an update on Townsend’s condition. “We need him to throw one of the next couple days and see again. But he’s been feeling good.”
Bianco emphasized caution regarding Townsend’s return: “We wanted to be really cautious. “I don’t know if it was a long shot for him to pitch this weekend. I don’t know if that’s fair to say, because we just wanted to make sure with all the doctors, with all the trainers, the pitch coach, and everything. That we don’t get ahead of ourselves, and then you feel like you’re taking a step back.”
”
Despite his absence from live action this weekend, there is reason for optimism surrounding Townsend’s recovery. He has managed to throw a few times this week after receiving good news from his MRI results.
Looking Ahead
As the Rebels prepare for their next challenge against No. 6 Mississippi State this upcoming weekend, all eyes will be on Townsend’s progress. Coach Bianco mentioned wanting to see him participate in a true bullpen session along with facing live hitters before making any decisions about his availability.
“I don’t know what next weekend looks like, but I think he is in a good spot. ” Bianco said. “He threw again and felt really good. So we’ll see where we are as the days progress.”
If cleared to pitch, it would mark two weeks since Townsend last took the mound in competitive play.
Midweek Action Against Memphis
Before diving into another high-stakes SEC series against No. 6 Mississippi State starting Friday through Sunday here in Oxford, the Rebels will have midweek action against Memphis on Tuesday night at FedEx Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM CT.
As we approach these next matchups, we’ll keep you updated on Cade Townsend’s status throughout the week and how he fits into Coach Bianco’s plans moving forward.
