Rebels continue to build coaching staff ahead of spring ball

With just ten days until the kickoff of spring ball for the Rebels, head coach Pete Golding is making moves to continue to enhance his coaching staff. This past week saw the return of a familiar face, as former Ole Miss safety Marcus Woodson rejoined the team after a brief stop at Kansas State. Additionally, late Monday evening, Chris Norris was announced as another key addition from within the SEC, coming from Arkansas, where he served as a special teams coordinator.

Norris: Special Teams Analyst

Joining Woodson in bolstering the Rebels’ staff is Norris, who will take on the role of special teams analyst. With an impressive background in special teams coaching across multiple programs, Norris comes highly regarded for his expertise.

Norris spent two seasons at Arkansas focusing on special teams coordination. Before that, he was instrumental at Western Carolina as their special teams coordinator. His analytical approach helped elevate player performance while honing skills critical for success in high-pressure situations.

During his five years at Oregon as a football analyst specializing in special teams, Norris contributed significantly to their success. He played a pivotal role in developing standout punters like Tom Snee and Blake Maimone—both of whom achieved strong statistics under his guidance.

A Proven Track Record

Chris Norris’s career highlights include:

  • National Championships: As a player at Nebraska (1991-95), he helped secure back-to-back national titles in 1994 and 1995.
  • All-American Mentorship: Throughout his coaching career, he has mentored two NFL Draft picks and six All-America selections.
  • Special Teams Excellence: At Oregon, Norris’s efforts led to players receiving All-Pac-12 honors for their performances on special teams—a testament to his ability to develop talent effectively.

Under his watchful eye at Oregon, the Ducks excelled not only in punt returns but also ranked among national leaders in kickoff returns.

Impact on Rebel Football

The additions of Woodson and Norris signal an aggressive push by Coach Golding to strengthen every facet of Rebel football ahead of spring practice. With both coaches bringing rich backgrounds filled with accolades and achievements, they will make an immediate impact on player development and overall team performance.

The combination of returning alumni like Woodson alongside experienced strategists like Norris creates an environment ripe for growth—a necessary ingredient for achieving success for the long haul in one of college football’s toughest conferences, the SEC.
