The Ole Miss Rebels came out swinging during the second day of the Bruce Bolt College Classic in Houston, showcasing their offensive power and pitching prowess in an impressive 8-0 victory over Ohio State on Saturday morning. With this win, No. 25 Ole Miss improved to 10-1 for the season.
Dominant Pitching Performance
Cade Townsend took center stage on the mound, earning his first win of the season. The sophomore left-hander was nothing short of spectacular, striking out nine batters while allowing just three hits and issuing only one walk over five scoreless innings. This performance marked a new career high for Townsend, who has consistently struck out eight or more hitters in each of his three starts this season.
Taylor Rabe came out of the bullpen to finish strong for Ole Miss, earning his first career save by working four innings and striking out seven batters. Rabe’s control was evident as he allowed just two baserunners during his time on the mound, retiring Ohio State in order during crucial moments late in the game.
Offensive Firepower
The Rebels’ offense was equally impressive, led by standout performances from Dom Decker and Brett Moseley. Decker had a stellar day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and three runs scored. This marked Decker’s first multi-home run game of his career, igniting excitement among fans and teammates alike.
Collin Reuter also contributed to the offensive explosion with a solo home run in the fourth inning. By that point in the game, Decker had already put Ole Miss ahead with a third-inning blast that made it 1-0.
In an exciting turn of events late in the game, redshirt freshman Brett Moseley entered as a defensive replacement but made an immediate impact at bat. In his only appearance at the plate during this contest, he hit a grand slam into Houston’s Crawford Boxes after loading up bases with walks from Decker and Reuter along with Judd Utermark’s single. This moment capped off an outstanding offensive display by giving Ole Miss an insurmountable lead at 8-0.
Game Highlights
Townsend’s dominance set up an early lead for Ole Miss as he struck out four batters within just two innings while limiting Ohio State’s scoring opportunities effectively throughout his outing. Despite facing some early hits—two coming right away in that first inning—he managed to keep runners from advancing past second base all day long.
Decker opened scoring for Ole Miss with his home run in the third inning before Reuter added another run via solo shot shortly thereafter. By fifth inning’s end when Townsend exited after five innings pitched—Ole Miss held onto their comfortable lead at 3-0.
Rabe’s entry into relief solidified control over Ohio State’s lineup as he continued to stifle any attempts at mounting a comeback through effective pitching until closing out confidently against them.
Looking Ahead
With this victory under their belt—their first shutout since defeating LSU during last year’s SEC Tournament—Ole Miss now looks forward to their final matchup at this year’s BRUCE BOLT College Classic against No. 9 Coastal Carolina scheduled for Sunday morning at 10:05 AM.
