Rebels fall short in extra innings against Baylor

Amidst the Houston skylines, the No. 25 Ole Miss Rebels (9-1) suffered their first defeat of the season Friday night, losing a heartbreaker to Baylor by a score of 6-5 in extra innings during the BRUCE BOLT College Classic.

This matchup showcased both teams’ competitive spirit and highlighted individual talents, particularly from Ole Miss pitcher Hunter Elliott and slugger Tristan Bissetta.

Elliott’s Stellar Performance

Hunter Elliott had a standout performance on the mound, striking out a career-high 11 batters over five innings. He allowed only two hits and one earned run in a shaky first inning before finding his rhythm. Elliott struck out eight of the last ten batters he faced, demonstrating his ability to dominate as the game progressed.

Despite his early struggles, Elliott’s resilience kept Ole Miss in contention throughout most of the game.

Bissetta Shines with Power Hitting

Tristan Bissetta was another bright spot for Ole Miss, hitting two home runs and finishing with three RBI while going 2-for-5 at the plate. This marked his second multi-home run game of the season, showcasing his power-hitting capabilities that have become crucial for the Rebels’ offense.

Bissetta’s contributions helped keep Ole Miss competitive even when facing adversity.

The Recap: A Rollercoaster Battle

The game began with Baylor taking an early lead as they capitalized on an error by Ole Miss’ defense. In the bottom of the second inning, Austin Fawley tied things up by driving in a run after reaching base due to another error from Baylor’s third baseman.

From there, Elliott settled into a groove, racking up strikeouts while allowing minimal baserunners until late in the game.

In a pivotal moment during the fifth inning, Bissetta launched his first home run—a two-run shot that sent fans into a frenzy and gave Ole Miss a 3-1 lead.

However, momentum shifted in favor of Baylor during the eighth inning when Hudson Calhoun struggled after starting strong with back-to-back strikeouts. After issuing a walk and giving up a single, Baylor’s Hunter Snow hit a three-RBI home run into left field—shifting momentum back to Baylor with them leading 4-3.

Not to be outdone, Bissetta responded immediately with another solo home run to tie it up again at 4-4 in the bottom half of that inning. The Rebels regained their lead shortly after when Fawley brought home Paino on a sacrifice fly for what seemed like an exhilarating comeback moment at 5-4 heading into ninth inning action.

Yet again showcasing their tenacity, Baylor managed to tie it once more at 5-5 with one out in ninth inning before neither team could capitalize further—sending us into extra innings where drama unfolded yet again.

With new rules implemented this season regarding ghost runners starting on second base for each team during extras; unfortunately for Ole Miss fans—the Bears scored an unearned run off some missed opportunities from their defense which sealed this heartbreaking defeat at 6-5 as they ended without scoring themselves despite having runners threatening across bases multiple times down stretch!

Looking Ahead: Next Game vs Ohio State

As disappointing as this loss may feel for players and fans alike—the Rebels are not done fighting yet! They will regroup quickly ahead of Saturday morning’s matchup against Ohio State set for f 11:05 AM CST!

Ole Miss has shown resilience throughout this young season thus far—so expect nothing less than determination as they look forward towards bouncing back in Day 2 from Houston.
