Rebels look to stay flawless on the road at the Bruce Bolt Classic

The Ole Miss Rebels baseball team is on fire as they kick off their 2026 season with an impressive 9-0 record. This marks their best start since the magical championship run in 2022 and ties them for the second-best start in program history. With a chance to extend this streak at the upcoming BRUCE BOLT College Classic, fans are eager to see how they perform against formidable opponents like Baylor, Ohio State, and No. 9 Coastal Carolina.

LEADING THE PACK

Ole Miss has demonstrated offensive prowess early in the season. They showcased their strength by run-ruling Southeast Missouri State with a dominant score of 13-3 in just seven innings. The highlight of that game was Will Furniss hitting a three-RBI walk-off home run—his first of the season.

Furniss has been a key player thus far, drawing an impressive 12 walks over nine games, averaging about 1.33 walks per game. He’s not alone; teammate Hayden Federico is also making his presence felt by averaging over one walk per game.

Collin Reuter has emerged as a standout hitter as well, accumulating six doubles through eight games—ranking him third in the NCAA and second in the SEC for this category. Meanwhile, Judd Utermark continues to shine with his power-hitting abilities; he became the first Rebel since at least 2012 to hit six home runs within his first eight games.

PITCHING WITH PRECISION

On the mound, Ole Miss boasts one of the strongest pitching staffs in recent memory with a collective ERA of just 2.64—third-lowest in the SEC. They have also recorded an impressive total of strikeouts (97), ranking seventh nationally among college teams.

Hunter Elliott will take center stage as he leads Ole Miss into battle against Baylor’s strong lineup during this weekend’s classic. His experience will be vital as he aims to build upon last year’s remarkable performance where he secured ten wins and struck out over one hundred batters.

SCOUTING BAYLOR AND OPPONENTS

Baylor enters this tournament with a record of 5-3 under head coach Mitch Thompson but has struggled recently after going winless at their previous tournament—the Round Rock Classic. Despite these setbacks, players like Travis Sanders are heating up offensively; Sanders currently boasts a .448 batting average and Tyce Armstrong leads his team with four home runs and nineteen RBIs.

Ohio State (5-2) presents another challenge for Ole Miss on Sunday when they match up against RHP Chris Domke who holds a solid ERA of 2.45 across two starts this season.

Finally, facing No. 9 Coastal Carolina (6-2) will test Ole Miss’ mettle even further as they contend with high expectations from both teams’ fanbases.

HOMERUN HEROES AND RECORD BREAKERS

Judd Utermark’s six homers have brought him closer to breaking into Ole Miss’ all-time career home run leaders list—currently sitting at thirty-five career homers which places him just outside the Top Ten rankings within program history.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that throughout these opening games of the season, Ole Miss has outscored its opponents significantly—49 runs compared to only fourteen allowed through three innings! Their ability to capitalize early gives them an edge heading into each matchup.

NEW FACES AND EXCITING TALENT

With nineteen new additions joining this year’s roster—including ten transfers—the Rebels are blending fresh talent alongside returning veterans seamlessly so far this season. Standout performances from Brett Moseley and Tate Sirmans during Opening Weekend hint at great potential moving forward; both launched home runs for their first collegiate hits—a rare achievement that showcases depth within coaching strategies implemented by Head Coach Mike Bianco’s staff.

As we look ahead towards next week’s midweek contests against Memphis and North Alabama followed by an exciting series against Evansville back at Swayze Field—there’s plenty for fans to be excited about!

A PROMISING SEASON AHEAD

As Ole Miss heads into their road trip for the BRUCE BOLT College Classic this weekend facing tough competition from Baylor, Ohio State & Coastal Carolina—their undefeated record offers hope that perhaps another deep postseason run may lie ahead! With explosive bats like Utermark leading offense combined with solid pitching efforts displayed thus far—the Rebels could very well continue making waves across college baseball landscapes!

First pitch for the Rebels against Baylor is set for 3:05 PM on Friday from Daiken Park in Houston.
