Rebels drop ninth straight to Florida 75-94

Ole Miss entered Saturday’s matchup against the reigning national champions, the Florida Gators, hoping for a “Mississippi Miracle.” After enduring a tumultuous season under head coach Chris Beard, this game represented not just another opportunity but a glimmer of hope at the end of an arduous tunnel. However, despite starting strong, the Rebels ultimately succumbed to the Gators with a final score of 75-94 at SJB Pavilion.

A Strong Start Fades Away

The game began with promise as Malik Dia ignited the crowd early on. His two mid-range jumpers propelled Ole Miss to an early lead of 6-3 just minutes into play. AJ Storr soon followed suit, hitting another jumper that brought the home team ahead 12-10 midway through the first half.

However, Florida quickly responded by going on a scoring spree that allowed them to establish a significant lead. The Gators surged ahead by as much as 14 points during the first half and ended it with a comfortable advantage of 43-32.

Rebels Fight Back but Can’t Regain Control

Ilias Kamardine opened up the second half with determination, reducing Florida’s lead to seven points at 43-36 after making a floater just over one minute in. Unfortunately for Ole Miss fans, this was short-lived, as Florida countered with a swift 5-0 run that pushed their lead back up to twelve points.

Throughout the remainder of the game, despite several efforts from Ole Miss to close the gap, Florida maintained control and prevented any serious threat from developing.

Standout Performances Amidst Struggles

Despite falling short once again—marking their ninth consecutive loss—there were still notable performances from individual players on Ole Miss’s roster. Malik Dia led all scorers with an impressive 24 points. This marked his seventh game this season scoring twenty or more points and his third consecutive performance reaching that milestone.

Ilias Kamardine contributed significantly as well with 14 points, while Pinkins added another ten for good measure. On defense, Corey Chest recorded two blocks—a testament to his ongoing contributions on that end of the floor—and it was also noteworthy that Ole Miss forced Florida into committing 19 turnovers during this contest—the most they’ve achieved in SEC play this season.

Coach Beard’s Optimism Shines Through

After reflecting on yet another difficult loss against such formidable opponents, Coach Chris Beard shared his thoughts candidly: “I think Florida is as good as advertised… I don’t know if there’s a better job being done in college basketball right now than Florida. Win the national championship last year and basically lose your backcourt… and now here we are 10 months later, and they’re in the driver’s seat in a lot of ways to win our conference. In my opinion, they’re every bit of a one-two seed-type team.”

Beard also took time to address Rebels fans directly: “My promise —I don’t make a lot of promises, but I’ll deliver on this—there will be better days. ”

Looking Ahead

As they prepare for their next challenge against LSU on Wednesday night at SJB Pavilion—set for an 8 p.m. tip-off broadcasted on SEC Network—the Rebels have an opportunity not only to break their losing streak but also to build momentum moving forward in what has been an incredibly demanding season.
