Texas’ biggest defensive weapon is hurt — Ole Miss is next

Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons is helped off the field after suffering a lower-leg injury against Florida on Oct. 17 in Austin.

Colin Simmons’ injury has added a major question to Ole Miss’ preparation for Texas. The star edge rusher left Saturday’s 27–24 loss to Florida with a lower-leg injury and did not return. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said he did not know the full extent of the injury after the game.

Before leaving, Simmons recorded eight tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack and two quarterback hurries. The sack extended his streak to five straight games and brought his career total to 31.5, the third-most in Texas program history.

Simmons’ status for Saturday’s matchup with Ole Miss remains uncertain. His diagnosis and recovery timeline have not been confirmed, so it is not yet clear whether he will be available when Texas hosts the Rebels on Oct. 24.

If Simmons can’t play, Texas would be without one of its most productive pass rushers. If he does suit up, Ole Miss will need to account for a defender who has consistently pressured opposing quarterbacks. Either way, the Rebels must be ready for a Texas front capable of creating negative plays.
