Simpler assignments and stronger early-down run defense have helped Ole Miss respond since Florida.

Ole Miss’ defense has looked different since its loss to Florida. The Rebels followed a strong showing against Vanderbilt with an even more complete performance Saturday, holding No. 13 Missouri to three points and just 39 rushing yards in a 31-3 win.
Pete Golding said stopping Missouri’s run game early was central to the defensive plan. “You’ve got to stop the run on early downs,” he said. Ole Miss did that, forcing Missouri to adjust as the Rebels built a lead. That allowed the defense to mix coverages and put more pressure on quarterback Austin Simmons.
Missouri scored a field goal on its opening drive, but the Tigers didn’t score again. Ole Miss’ defensive front set the tone, and the Rebels tackled better early in the game. Missouri finished with just 1.5 yards per carry.
Defensive tackle Will Echoles said the unit simplified its approach after the Florida game, focusing on attacking blocks, getting off blocks and making plays. That reset has helped Ole Miss hold back-to-back SEC opponents to three points or fewer in the first half.
Golding acknowledged there is still room to improve. Missed tackles created some explosive plays against Missouri, even as the defense tightened up in the red zone and got off the field. Ole Miss will need to carry its improved tackling and run defense into next week’s road game at Texas.
