Makhi Frazier is earning Golding’s trust

Makhi Frazier No. 25

Makhi Frazier is starting to earn something every running back wants from his head coach — trust.

And Pete Golding made it clear Monday that the Michigan State transfer is making progress.

Frazier rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries in Ole Miss’ 52-17 victory over Vanderbilt. However, his improvement away from the football appears to be just as important.

“I felt like he kind of separated himself from some of the other guys from an every-down standpoint,” Golding said.

That’s a pretty strong statement about a player competing for more opportunities.

More Than Just Carries

One thing Golding likes about Frazier is his development in pass protection, balance and body control.

Those are important qualities for a running back who wants to stay on the field beyond obvious rushing situations.

And that’s where Frazier is making progress.

He averaged 5.6 yards per carry against Vanderbilt, giving Ole Miss another productive option in the backfield.

But his ability to protect Trinidad Chambliss and handle different responsibilities could be what earns him more playing time.

Making His Case

Kewan Lacy remains an important part of the offense, while JT Lindsey and Shekai Mills-Knight provide additional depth.

Still, Frazier is making the running back rotation more interesting.

With No. 13 Missouri coming to Oxford, the Rebels need another strong performance from their rushing attack.

Frazier doesn’t have to become Ole Miss’ featured running back to make an impact.

But he’s showing Golding that he can handle more responsibility. And with Missouri coming to Oxford, that trust could become just as important as his production.
