Edwin Joseph’s status uncertain as Ole Miss prepares for Missouri

Ole Miss safety Edwin Joseph’s status remains uncertain for Saturday’s matchup against Missouri after suffering an ankle sprain against Vanderbilt. Joseph is scheduled for another medical opinion Tuesday.

Ole Miss could be without starting safety Edwin Joseph when Missouri comes to Oxford on Saturday.

Joseph suffered an ankle sprain during the Rebels’ 52-17 victory over Vanderbilt, leaving his availability uncertain for another important SEC matchup.

Head coach Pete Golding confirmed Monday that Joseph received the diagnosis Sunday and is scheduled for another medical opinion Tuesday.

“The only concern right now from an injury standpoint Saturday would be Edwin,” Golding said.

Golding also explained the next step in determining Joseph’s availability.

“We’re going to go get another opinion on that tomorrow and see, and we’ll manage that throughout the week,” he said.

Why It Matters

Joseph has been an important part of the Ole Miss secondary, appearing in all five games and recording 18 tackles this season.

And the timing of his injury isn’t ideal.

Missouri is bringing former Ole Miss quarterback Austin Simmons and receiver Cayden Lee back to Oxford, giving the Rebels another challenge in the passing game.

If Joseph can’t play, Ole Miss could face adjustments in its safety rotation, defensive communication and coverage assignments.

However, Golding hasn’t identified a replacement or ruled Joseph out.

What Comes Next

Tuesday’s medical opinion should give Ole Miss a clearer picture of Joseph’s availability.

And with Missouri coming to Oxford, the Rebels could be facing an important defensive adjustment if their starting safety can’t go.
