Brookhaven defensive back Tanner Hardy is continuing to build momentum heading into his junior season.
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect is rated as a three-star defensive back by the industry rankings. Hardy is coming off a strong sophomore season in which he recorded 67 tackles, including 49 solo stops, and six interceptions while helping Brookhaven win the Class 5A state championship.
Hardy has spent the offseason working to become a stronger and more complete defensive back.
“I’ve gotten stronger, become more physical, improved my football IQ, and taken a big step forward in man coverage,” Hardy said. “I’ve worked equally at every defensive back position, and I believe my biggest strengths are my football IQ and tackling.”
His versatility gives Brookhaven the ability to use him throughout the secondary. Hardy has the athleticism to line up in man coverage, but he is also a physical defender who is willing to come downhill and make tackles.
Coach Bingham believes Hardy’s balance, footwork and ability to stay connected in coverage separate him from other young defensive backs.
“Tanner stays balanced throughout the route with fluid hips and smooth footwork,” Bingham said. “He transitions quickly, breaks on the ball with control, and does a great job staying in phase while closing throwing windows.”
Hardy’s recruitment has continued to grow. He currently holds offers from Jackson State, Arkansas State, South Alabama and Mississippi Gulf Coast. He is also hearing from Mississippi State, Miami and Colorado.
The three-star prospect hopes to get a closer look at several programs as his recruitment moves forward.
“I’d like to visit Ole Miss, Miami, Mississippi State, Colorado and South Alabama,” Hardy said.
Hardy enters his junior season with high expectations for himself and his Brookhaven teammates. After winning a state championship last season, the Panthers will be looking to make another deep postseason run.
“This season, fans and college coaches can expect a more physical, shutdown defender who plays with energy,” Hardy said. “My goals are to help my team win another state championship and earn four-star status by the spring while proving I’m one of the top athletes in my class.”
Already carrying a three-star industry ranking, Hardy has the production, versatility and confidence to continue moving up recruiting boards. Another big season could help him establish himself as one of Mississippi’s top defensive backs in the 2028 class.
