The No. 17 Ole Miss women’s basketball team defeated rival Mississippi State, 93-68, Sunday before more than 4,500 at the Sandy and John Black Pavilion. The Rebels improved to 16-3 overall and to 3-1 inside the SEC, while the Bulldogs dropped to 14-4 and to 1-3 in conference play.
Four Rebels finished in double digits in the scoring column in what was the largest margin of victory over MSU since 1997. Ole Miss’ 93 points were the most against the Bulldogs since 1994.

Cotie McMahon led the Rebels with 21 points, followed by Sira Thienou’s 20, Latash Lattimore with 17 and Christeen Iuwala’s 14.

Ole Miss head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin was asked to reflect back on the time eight years ago when she took this job. Ole Miss was a perennial cellar-dweller in the SEC, while Mississippi State, at the time coach by Texas head man Vic Schaefer, was near the top of the college basketball world.
“When we went to play Texas, Vic pulled me aside,” said McPhee-McCuin, “and was excited to talk about that. It was the first time that I was like, ‘wow,’ because this dude dominated me when he was there, and ever since then it seems like we’re a lucky three-point game every time we play now that he’s at Texas.
“He told me,’ You people don’t understand the work you’ve done there, but I know, because I was there, and it’s not easy to do.’ That was the first time that I really thought about it, because I’ve been on a steady incline, just fighting. I want to win a national championship here.
“I do know that the program is not what it once was before, but I do still think we need a little bit more respect.”
