Closing Time in Oxford: Walker Hooks building a Stopper of the Year case

DALLAS– In an impressive display of skill and determination, Ole Miss Baseball’s standout pitcher, Walker Hooks, has earned a well-deserved spot on the prestigious 2026 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List. This recognition comes as no surprise, given Hooks’ remarkable performance throughout the season thus far.

With a flawless record of 3-0, he has also secured four saves while maintaining an admirable earned run average (ERA) of 2.48 across 15 appearances and a total of 32.2 innings pitched. His ability to dominate on the mound is underscored by his impressive tally of 40 strikeouts, paired with a strikingly low opponent batting average of just .165, highlighting his effectiveness in neutralizing hitters.

As a sophomore, Hooks has truly found his stride, particularly in recent outings where he has shown remarkable consistency and poise under pressure. Over his last nine appearances out of the bullpen, he has not only earned three victories but has also tallied four saves while impressively lowering his ERA to an outstanding 1.37. During this stretch, he showcased his prowess by fanning 23 batters while issuing only two walks over 19.2 innings—an indication of both his command and control on the mound. Notably, Hooks has managed to limit damage remarkably well; he has allowed more than one earned run in only two instances this season across all his appearances, solidifying his role as the team’s most dependable closing option, where he also converted a save in his last three outings.
