QBs drew WR Horatio Fields to Ole Miss

Former Auburn Tigers wide receiver Horatio Fields was almost a Missouri Tiger.

Almost.

Fields committed to Missouri shortly after entering the portal from Auburn. The thing of it was, though, is that he never signed an paperwork with Mizzou. So, when Ole Miss came calling, he answered.

Now he’s in an Ole Miss receivers room and appears ready to breakout.

“The process I would say was easy,” Fields said Wednesday following the Rebels’ soring practice. “I started at one place and I was going there. Then Ole Miss came calling, and that was the right calling.

“I think from start to finish, from the first conversation of coming here, I was set on being a Rebel.”

Fields caught 12 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown last season at Auburn. he played in just four games, but that didn’t keep former Ole Miss and Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze from singing his praises.

“Horatio Fields has become the leader of that room, believe it or not,” Freeze said last August. “He is the father figure in that room, the old guy, and he speaks great wisdom to all of that room. We voted on captains yesterday, and he received quite a few votes, and that’s pretty special for a receiver that has come in.”

But with the eligibility of Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss hanging in the balance when Fields decided to come to Oxford, what was his thought process?

“I think just my faith and the coaching that’s around the team,” said Fields. “I had faith in Trinidad coming back, so that played a big role in me coming here…And also bringing in Deuce Knight. I had that type of insurance knowing that I’m going to at least have a QB.”

Knight was teammates with Fields at Auburn and left the Plains for Oxford over the offseason, as well.

“I think the past year that Ole Miss had also played a role, too,” Fields related.

Ole Miss finished ranked No. 3 in all the major polls and advanced to the semifinal Fiesta Bowl in the College Football Playoffs last season.

Fields was a three-star prospect out of New Manchester High School in Douglasville, Ga., in the 2021 class.
