Rebels roll past Alcorn State in commanding victory

On Tuesday night, the No. 25 Ole Miss Rebels showcased their strength with an impressive 11-1 win over the Alcorn State Braves in a seven-inning non-conference matchup. This victory brings Ole Miss to a record of 23-11 overall and 5-7 in the SEC as they look ahead to an important series against No. 24 LSU.

Strong Start on the Mound

Freshman pitcher Grayson Gibson took the mound for Ole Miss, navigating early challenges with poise. After allowing back-to-back doubles to start the game, Gibson managed to escape without any runs scoring thanks to a pickoff at third base and two strikeouts. He completed two innings, giving up no runs on two hits while striking out four batters.

Gibson’s ability to maintain composure under pressure set the tone for what would be a dominant outing by the Rebels’ pitching staff.

Offensive Explosion Begins

The Rebels’ offense came alive in the bottom of the second inning when they loaded the bases. Dom Decker delivered a clutch double that cleared the bases, followed shortly by another double from Judd Utermark that brought Decker home. This offensive push established an early lead that Ole Miss would not relinquish.

“Really good approaches,” Decker commented after the game. “Taking the pitches that were given to us.”

Bullpen Contributions Shine

Owen Kelly entered from the bullpen in the third inning and continued Ole Miss’s strong pitching performance by allowing no runs on one hit while striking out three batters.

In addition, Noah Allen made his mark in relief during the fourth inning, surrendering only one run on two hits while recording five strikeouts over two innings of work.

Leo Odom was particularly impressive later in the game, striking out five batters while facing just six hitters over 1.2 innings pitched. His performance earned him praise from head coach Mike Bianco: “Super proud of (Odom). Great job by our staff tonight.”

Building on Momentum

As Ole Miss extended its lead further into the game, Cannon Goldin led off with a walk in the third inning and scored on an RBI single from Austin Fawley, making it 5-0.

In what was perhaps their most productive inning, Ole Miss loaded up again in the fourth after Tristan Bissetta led off with a double. Owen Paino stepped up with a timely two-out single that drove home both Bissetta and Will Furniss, pushing their lead to 7-0.

Alcorn State finally got on board in the fifth with Clayvonjae Wright hitting a solo home run but it did little to dampen Ole Miss’s spirits.

The Rebels quickly responded when Decker walked and scored on another RBI from Utermark later that same inning.

Game-Winning Walks Seal It

The final inning saw more fireworks as Decker kicked things off with a single followed by walks from Bissetta and Furniss to load up the bases once again. The pressure mounted as Goldin’s walk brought Decker home before Luke Romine added another run via his walk which allowed Bissetta to cross home plate as well. Paino then sealed Alcorn State’s fate with another walk that sent Furniss home for an emphatic end to this dominating contest at 11-1.

Decker finished his night going an impressive 2-for-3 at bat with three runs scored along with three RBIs—an outstanding contribution toward securing this win for his team.

Looking Ahead: SEC Showdown Against LSU

With this commanding victory behind them, Ole Miss is set to shift its focus towards their upcoming three-game series against No. 24 LSU starting Friday at 6:30 p.m., which will be streamed live on SEC Network+. The stakes are high as both teams vie for critical conference wins moving deeper into their season schedules.
