It should come as no surprise that one of the Rebels’ top priority prospects for the class of 2027, the four-star athlete Alvin Mosley, continues to garner attention this offseason for his exceptional athletic prowess. On Wednesday evening we joined Mosley as he found himself among the top ten finalists selected from Houston’s elite high school basketball talent for the esteemed Guy V. Lewis Award, which honors the most outstanding boys’ basketball player in the Greater Houston Area.

This prestigious recognition, named after the legendary College Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Guy V. Lewis, who guided the University of Houston’s program from 1956 to 1986, is a testament to both skill and dedication in the sport. Coach Lewis, an alumnus of the University of Houston himself, was instrumental in shaping college basketball as we know it today; he led the Cougars to five Final Four appearances and achieved nearly 600 victories during his illustrious career. Among his many groundbreaking contributions was the iconic “Game of the Century” in 1968, where his #2-ranked Cougars faced off against the top-ranked UCLA Bruins in front of an astonishing crowd of over 52,000 fans at the Astrodome—a moment etched in sports history and broadcast nationally.
“Guy V. Lewis had a keen eye for the local talent in the Houston area and was integral in making Houston a hotbed for recruiting in the country,” remarked Rob Lopez, the Chair of the Guy V. Lewis Award Committee. “Coach Lewis revolutionized the game and transformed how it was perceived, truly shining a spotlight on Houston as a basketball powerhouse.” This award announcement comes at a particularly poignant time during Final Four week, which is fitting given that only eight coaches have ever led their teams to more Final Fours than Lewis himself.
Although Mosley did not take home the honor this year, he experienced a moment of pride as he witnessed his close friend Reese Alston receive the prestigious award, further solidifying their shared journey through competitive sports.
As Mosley reflects on this chapter of his life, he turns his attention to the final stretch of his athletic career, where he faces an exciting yet challenging crossroads. Numerous college programs are fervently pursuing one of high school football’s most promising talents, with Ole Miss and his hometown team, Houston, among the programs leading the charge in this heated recruitment battle. Beyond these two, several other institutions are making last-minute efforts to sway him toward their programs, all eager to secure such a coveted player.
This season, Mosley emerged as a standout player on the turf, earning the title of District 12-4A DI overall MVP for Crawford, which many would argue was the pinnacle of the program’s history, culminating in an impressive record of 12-2. Standing tall at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 185 pounds, this remarkable wide receiver showcased his talent with a staggering 62 receptions, amassing a total of 1,138 yards and scoring an impressive 27 touchdowns.
However, what truly sets him apart as a coveted prospect is not just his prowess on the football field but also his multifaceted athletic abilities. On the basketball court, Mosley displayed equal brilliance by leading Fort Bend Crawford to the state championship game, where they finished as runners-up with an outstanding season record of 31-6. His performance did not go unnoticed; he earned a spot on the UIL All-State Tournament team while averaging commendable statistics of 13.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.2 steals, and 2.4 assists per game throughout the season.
Looking ahead to his future in college athletics, Mosley has scheduled an official visit to Ole Miss for June 5th. However, before that pivotal date arrives, he will take a trip to Oxford from April 2nd to April 3rd, providing the Rebels with an invaluable opportunity to solidify their position in his competitive recruitment process.
Following the Wednesday ceremony, he previewed his visit to Ole Miss with 365 below: “I really feel good about me going up there.”
Congrats to Alvin on a heck of a hoop career, and we will have more following his visit conclusion Friday.
