In the heart of Texas, talent flows like a mighty river, unstoppable and overflowing. Among the many cities that contribute to this rich tapestry of athletic prowess, Houston stands out as a beacon of exceptionalism—not just in football but in the production of pure athletes who redefine the game. Here, we find hidden gems like Xavier Muhammad, whose moment is fast approaching.
When I first laid eyes on South Houston’s own Xavier Muhammad, it was his basketball skills that captivated me. At 6 feet 5 inches and 250 pounds, he is not your typical lanky hoops star; he possesses a strong frame paired with agility and finesse. His remarkable footwork and sharp basketball IQ translate seamlessly onto the football field, making him a true unicorn among athletes.
Ranked as the No. 118 overall prospect in the nation and No. 12 defensive lineman from Texas, Muhammad is drawing attention from top programs eager to harness his raw talent. Recently, Coach Larry Black from Michigan has set his sights on bringing this extraordinary lineman to Ann Arbor. Could Ole Miss be next in line to pursue this rising star?
As we caught up with Muhammad about his recruitment journey, he shared insights into which programs are standing out: “Miami, TCU, UofH, Stanford, and Vanderbilt have been consistently reaching out.” He feels blessed for every opportunity and conversation that comes his way.
But Xavier’s aspirations extend beyond sports; he seeks an environment that nurtures both athletic excellence and personal growth. My future home has to feel right for me and my family. I’m looking for a coaching staff that’s consistent and transparent, a defensive system that fits my skill set, and a program that truly prioritizes player development on and off the field. Education is important to me. I want to be somewhere that prepares me for life after football—academically, professionally, and personally. Player development, academic and career support, the overall college atmosphere, and a real family environment all matter to me. I want to grow—not just as a player, but as a man. Wherever I choose has to align with my goals and help me become the best version of myself in every area.”
Quality over quantity resonates deeply with Muhammad’s vision for his future. Since Coach Willie Fritz took charge at UofH, there’s been a concerted effort to tap into local talent like him—something that speaks volumes about their commitment to building something special right at home.
Muhammad appreciates the genuine relationships fostered by Coach Fritz and his staff: “Coach Fritz and the UofH staff have shown me a lot of love. Being close to home means something to me. They’ve been intentional about building a real relationship with me and my family, and that definitely stands out. Coach Fritz and Coach Ross have been very honest about how I would develop, how I fit into their program, and what it would mean to the city of Houston if I stayed home to play college football. Houston is building something special, and I’m just grateful to be in this position.” The prospect of representing Houston while contributing to its football legacy excites him immensely.
As SEC programs inevitably come calling, Muhammad reflects on what he could bring to such elite conferences and a program like Ole Miss: “I believe I bring physicality, versatility, and a relentless motor, and a lot of that comes from playing multiple sports my entire life. Competing year-round has helped me develop toughness, footwork, and a competitive mindset. The SEC is known for elite competition, and that’s something I embrace. I’m not afraid of the stage. I want to compete against the best every week. SEC programs are extremely competitive, and I plan to bring that same edge and intensity wherever I go.“
The Rebels are no stranger to turning raw, edgy linemen like Muhammad into high-caliber athletes at the next level. He shared more on what it means if the Rebels came calling, “It would truly be an honor to have the opportunity to compete at a program like Ole Miss!” If given that chance, I’d bring toughness, discipline, and a mindset that I’m coming to work every single day. I can move around on the defensive line, set the edge, rush the passer, and make plays in space. But beyond the physical plays, I’d bring leadership and the mindset that iron sharpens iron. I believe my skill set fits their style of play, and if given the opportunity, I’d be ready to compete and earn everything.”
With spring football looming on the horizon after an impressive season scoring over 1K career points in basketball, Xavier is readying himself for an exhilarating offseason filled with potential visits:
