Zalonzo “Cain” Handy
It’s still very early with the 2031 class, but Zalonzo “Cain” Handy is already hard to ignore.
At 6-foot-1 and 184 pounds, Handy has an impressive frame for his age. But what I really like is that he isn’t just bigger than everybody else. There’s legitimate athleticism to go with the size.
Handy can line up at quarterback or running back and make things happen with the football in his hands. He has good vision, runs with power and can plant his foot and change direction quickly. Once he sees a crease, he has the burst to get downhill and isn’t afraid to finish through contact.
He brings some of that same ability to defense. Handy can play linebacker or defensive back, tackles well and attacks the football in the air.
I’m not ready to lock him into one position this early, but the more I watch him, the more running back makes sense.
His coach, Kiery Stribling, sees it the same way.
“Cain’s size and speed separate him, but I also love how free he plays. He looks like he’s always having fun out there, and he’s very coachable,” Stribling said. “I see him as a true two-way player throughout high school, but at the next level, I definitely see him as a running back.”
There’s another part of Handy’s game that stands out. He isn’t simply getting by because he’s physically ahead of players his age.
“What really stands out is how physically built he already is for his age, but he also has next-level attributes,” Stribling said. “He’s not just the big kid who can run over everybody.”
That’s important with a young prospect like Handy. The size catches your attention first, but the vision, movement, versatility and natural athletic ability are what make you keep watching.
For now, it’s about development. Cleaning up his running-back footwork, becoming more patient behind his blocks and continuing to develop his overall feel for the position will be important over the next few years.
Stribling believes the ceiling could be extremely high.
“Nobody can tell me this kid won’t be one of the top recruits in the country one day.”
That’s a big projection for a 2031 prospect, but when you watch Handy, you can understand why his coach believes it.
